During the first few months you and your baby will be inseparable. Even at night, your baby will be by your bed in their Moses basket or crib. A Moses basket is ideal if you want to keep your baby close by wherever you are. They have strong handles and are easy to move from place to place. If you decide on a Moses basket, you may also want to consider getting a rocking stand to accompany it. These are great for soothing your baby to sleep.
Cribs will help to give your nursery that traditional feel. Many of ours come with a gliding or rocking motion, which help baby drift off to sleep.
Cots and cot beds
When you start shopping for a cot there are lots of different options for you to choose from. Our quick and easy guide will help you to find exactly what you need.
Things to consider:
Drop side: Many cots offer this mechanism. It allows for you to cradle your baby in one hand, whilst raising or lowering the side with the other. This is especially helpful when your baby is sleeping as you can pop them in without ever disrupting their precious slumber.
Base positions: If your cot specifications include base positions, it means that you can adjust the height of your mattress within the cot. Usually cots come with 2 or 3 different base positions. This means you can have the mattress level at its highest during your child's first couple of months and lower it as they become older and more likely to attempt their great escape!
Cot beds: If you're looking for good value, it's worth considering a cot bed, as they will serve your little one for years. As your child grows so does the cot bed, transforming from a standard cot to a child's bed with a few simple adjustments.
Teething Rails: Eventually your baby won't be able to resist the urge to chew! You can help protect their cot and their little gums with teething rails. Teething rails are clear and non toxic, ensuring your baby stays safe as they grow and begin to explore.
Make sure your baby is comfy wherever you go with a travel cot. Travel cots are quick and easy to assemble and pack away, so they're perfect if you're going on holiday or staying away from home overnight. Many double up as play pen too and most come complete with travel bags and removable and washable covers. Make sure you don't leave home without one!
A mattress is one of the most important investments you will make and you should never use a second hand one, no matter how new. The first thing you'll need to consider when buying a mattress is the size. 120cm x 60cm (size 200) will fit a cot and 140cm x 70cm (size 400) will fit a cot bed.
Many of our mattresses have different benefits so, to help you choose the one that's perfect for your baby, we have included some helpful info about the different options available.
Eco Foam Mattress: 20% of the foam in an eco mattress is made from a renewable source - natural soya or maize - so they're better for the environment. Eco foam mattresses have a handy, wipeable, breathable and hygienic cover.
Eco Sprung Mattress: This is a high quality sprung unit, encased in high density foam with a breathable, anti allergic cover to protect against dust mites. They are quilted for comfort and provide excellent support for your growing baby.
Eco Coolflow Mattress: A high quality spring unit is encased in high density foam, beneath a special cool flow, anti allergic cover. The cover is 99.9% effective against dust mites and is removable for washing at 60 degrees.
It is important to ensure that your baby has enough, but not too many, blankets. This is because you never want your baby to be too hot or too cold. Our temperature chart below is a good guide to the number of blankets required;
We stock loads of different styles of bedding, so all you need to decide is what your theme's going to be!
Apart from your sheets, quilts, pillows, blankets and bumper, there are a few other things you may also need. Cot mobiles are perfect for keeping your baby entertained whilst they lay in their cot. Their dangling toys attract your baby's eye while the soothing lullabies help baby to drift off to sleep.
Keep the sun at bay by making sure you have a good set of curtains and, if that's not enough, a blackout blind should do the trick. Blackout blinds make sure that nothing disturbs your little one's rest and are especially useful in the summer when the sun comes up really early.
Something else you'll probably find useful is a temperature monitor. This will tell you whether your nursery's too hot, too cold or just right, helping you to achieve the perfect environment for your baby to live in.
Helpful sleep tips
Babies should be placed on their backs to sleep and should be well away from smoky atmospheres. Your baby should not be too hot or too cold. They need to be in the 'feet to foot position' at the foot of the cot with bedding arranged to prevent wriggling under the cover.
A baby monitor is another essential piece of kit for your nursery. There are lots of different types to choose from, ranging from those which only allow you to listen to your baby to more sophisticated models that include a display screen so you can watch your baby too.
Some models also include movement detectors. These monitor the movement in your baby's cot and sound an alarm when no movement is detected. Many monitors also include night lights and some even play lullaby melodies to help sooth your baby to sleep.
